The best hidden gems on Netflix right now

Promo art for From Rock Star To Killer.
Netflix

Did you know that Netflix actually has a hidden gem category that’s searchable on the site? It’s true, but the streamer’s definition of a hidden gem doesn’t necessarily line up with our own. For the purposes of this ongoing post, we take the time to throw the spotlight on some of Netflix’s shows that aren’t getting the attention they deserve. Most of the time, there are plenty of dramas or comedies to choose from.

But in the absence of any worthy scripted hidden gems this month, we’re turning our attention to a pair of recently arrived Netflix original documentaries: Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn’s Treasure and the provocatively named From Rock Star To Killer. Keep reading, and you’ll find more shows off the beaten path among the best hidden gems on Netflix.

Forrest Fenn has been dead for over four years, but he certainly knew how to keep his name alive. He supposedly took $2 million worth of gold coins from his collection and hid them in a remote spot. Then he invited treasure hunters to find his cache with a few cryptic hints. And if you guessed that treasure hunters went wild over that, then you’d be correct.

Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn’s Treasure is a three-episode documentary that takes a look back at how Fenn started his stunt, the toll it’s taken on would-be fortune hunters, and why the apparent end of the hunt isn’t necessarily the end after all. If nothing else, Fenn made himself and his lost treasure into a modern legend.

Bertrand Cantat may not be a household name in America, but he was a legitimate rock star in his native France. But as the title of From Rock Star to Killer implies, Cantat killed a woman named Marie Trintignant, an actress and mother of four who was his mistress.

There was no doubt that Cantat was responsible for Trintignant’s death; the question was, how legally culpable was he for causing it? This three-episode documentary revisits the unfolding legal saga and how it divided French society. And Trintignant isn’t the only woman who dies near Cantat in this story.

When McCoy refuses to pay Red Bill the bounties he’s collected, it sets off a dangerous contest of wills between the two men. Not every sitcom is going to be light and fluffy. Especially not A.P. Bio, the show that has remarkably few teaching scenes because the lead character, Jack Griffin (Glenn Howerton), isn’t much of a science teacher. Jack was a philosophy professor at Harvard, at least until his nemesis, Miles Leonard (Tom Bennett), got the job that he wanted.

Most of the kids in Jack’s new science class are bright, so he taps them for his revenge plans against Miles. Given Jack’s circumstances, even getting payback on Miles won’t bring back the life of privilege that he lost. So Jack will keep on using his students to advance his schemes, even as he gets more involved with the school and the faculty than he’d like to admit.

Pantheon may be an animated series, but it’s far from a cartoon. Much like Blue Eye Samurai, AMC’s short-lived sci-fi show transcends its medium to deliver a story that resembles a live-action drama. It also presents an alternate present where AI is already obsolete compared to UI — Uploaded Intelligence.

UIs were once people, but now their minds only exist inside of computers. Somehow, a UI is involving itself in the life of a teenage girl named Maddie Kim (Katie Chang). Maddie soon comes to believe that this ghost in the machine may actually be her father, David (Daniel Dae Kim). Meanwhile, Maddie’s online friend, Caspian Keyes (Paul Dano), has an even deeper connection to the UIs than he suspects. And Caspian’s entire life is a carefully constructed lie by the Logorhythms corporation, which has its own agenda for his future.

Tim is married to Sam’s sister, Chrissy (Shawntay Dalon), even though the guys spend more time with each other.

Tim and Sam are ad men who are trying to build Tim’s company, Cramblin Advertising, into something greater. This duo may not always be able to follow through on their grand ambitions, but they do get a shot at a few big companies. Series producer Jason Sudeikis has a recurring role on the show as Carter Grant, a Chrysler executive who may stand in the way of Tim and Sam’s chance of landing their biggest client to date. And Sudeikis isn’t the only familiar face to show up as Tim and Sam pursue their dreams, no matter how out of reach they seem.

But in the present, DWL is barely staying afloat while its new owner, Jack Spade (Arrow’s Stephen Amell) tries to keep his late father’s business alive.

Jack is also the top in-ring star of the DWL as a dastardly heel (villain), while his younger brother, Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig), is rapidly on the rise as the territory’s biggest face (hero). Just over a decade ago, NBC took a big swing with Aquarius, a period crime drama set in the 1960s that finally gave The X-Files’ David Duchovny someone other than aliens to chase. Duchovny plays LAPD Detective Sam Hodiak, who has been asked to investigate the disappearance of a teenager, Emma Karn (Emma Dumont).

Emma has come under the sway of Charles Manson (Gethin Anthony), and the series slowly expands Manson’s real-life history. He’s every sitcom husband you’ve ever seen all rolled into one, and Annie hates him with a passion.

Sam’s problem is that he can’t turn off his acerbic wit, and he does have a tendency to alienate people around him. Two of the few people who can stand Sam are his sponsor, Ben Burns (Will Sasso), and Claire Wilkes (Anja Savcic), the young woman Sam is sponsoring. Their dynamic makes the show.

One hundred teenagers, including Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor), Bellamy Blake (Bob Morley), and Octavia Blake (Marie Avgeropoulos) are expelled from the Ark and forced to determine if it’s possible to reclaim the Earth. The group soon discovers that there are other factions of survivors on their homeworld, and there may not be a safe haven for anyone when the Ark itself is threatened with destruction.

If you remember Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G and Borat, then you may have a better idea of what to expect from Cunk on Earth. This is a mockumentary produced by The Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker that features Diane Morgan reprising her role as Philomena Cunk, a blithering idiot who interviews real experts on the show.

This series has a really dry sense of humor, and much of the comedy comes from Morgan’s ability to keep herself from breaking character in the face of some of her incredulous interview subjects. This is a parody of nearly every documentary you’ve ever seen, which makes it so much fun to watch.

Blue Eye Samurai is an unusual anime that appears to be picking up traction with fans who aren’t typically into animation. That’s because this is a series that fully embraces drama, as Mizu (Maya Erskine), a young woman passing herself off as a man, cuts a bloody path of vengeance in 17th century Japan when half-Caucasian and half-Japanese people like Mizu were considered abominations.

Mizu is accompanied on her quest by Ringo (Masi Oka), a handless man who proves to be a loyal friend. Mizu also finds an unexpected ally in Taigen (Darren Barnet), a swordsman who comes to respect her despite wanting to duel her to the death to restore his honor for a defeat at Mizu’s hands. This is an intricately plotted and executed series, which is just as compelling and interesting as any live-action series.

This was originally an HBO production produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg nearly a decade after their acclaimed World War II miniseries, Band of Brothers. The Pacific returns to the same timeframe while exploring the battles in the Pacific from the point of view of PFC Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Cpl. Eugene Sledge (Joseph Mazzello), GySgt. John Basilone (Jon Seda), and others.

This miniseries is based on the real accounts of the men who fought in the war, and it’s an unflinching look at combat during wartime and the high cost it demands from everyone involved.

Thanks to the film Dumb Money, the 2021 GameStop short squeeze is once again a popular topic. Netflix’s documentary, Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga, is a three-part look back at the tumultuous turn of events when amateur investors outmaneuvered the professional stock traders by driving up GameStop’s stock so high that the short sellers couldn’t buy back the stock without losing millions.

This documentary doesn’t quite cover all of the bases, but it’s still an intriguing look back at a Wall Street revolt that didn’t quite end the way most of the investors wanted it to.

A reimagining of the classic ‘70s and ‘80s sitcom, One Day at a Time centers around a young Cuban mother and nurse and her two children who live together in a small apartment with her elderly mother while interacting frequently with their goofy, young landlord. While the basics stay true to the original, the underrated sitcom delves into serious topics like PTSD, alcohol abuse, gender identity, mental illness, and racism. There was fan outcry when Netflix canceled the series after three seasons, but it was eventually revived by Pop for a fourth and final one. The first three seasons are still available to watch on Netflix. With a talented and likable cast that includes the incomparable Rita Moreno, it’s a show that deserved to run for far longer than it did.
